Piranelli: "We need to get to bed as quickly as possible"

England bowed out of Euro 2012 after yesterday’s 4-2 loss to Italy on penalty kicks.

Cesare Prandelli’s team will lock horns with Germany in one of semi-finals. Portugal and Sp ain will go head to head in the other.

Despite the lack of goals after 90 minutes of play, plus an additional 30 of overtime, the Italians looked to be the better team with their attacks.

“Shoot-outs are always a game of chance but I believe we were worthy of winning. It’s 80% luck,” said a modest Prandelli. “Some players have mastered those kinds of situations but luck is the key factor.”

Prandelli said that after the game, he telephoned Italy’s President Giorgio Napolitano to congratulate him.

The Italian coach says that while the Germans will have had a few more days of rest going into the semi-finals, he still believes that the Italian side has a good chance of making it to the finals if they play with the same passion.

“Spain and German are the favourites but we will put up a struggle,” said Piranelli, adding that they want to return home quickly and catch up on their rest.

"To be frank we just need to get to bed as quickly as possible and get as much rest as possible. We stopped celebrating 10 minutes after the game and immediately started thinking about the semi-final,” the Italian said.

English coach Roy Hodgson told reporters that he never wanted for the game to end in a shoot-out given the past track record of England in this regard.

Hodgson added that taking 11 meter shots on goal can’t be taught to players

“Did you see how Andrea Pirlo took his shot so calm and collected? That’s something that can never be taught,” Hodgson said.
