Animals Have Free Reign in Alaverdi
The tourist season has kicked off in and around the picturesque town of Alaverdi, in northern Armenia. Visitors wandering through the streets might get the impression that they're in they’re in the rural countryside when they come across scenes like above on their way to the monastery at Sanahin.
The sight of wandering animals raises the ire of 73 year-old grandpa Razmik. "What's the reason for animals to be strolling through town in the midst of people? They should be kept up in the mountains. Is this a village or a city?"
Alaverdi Mayor Artur Nalbandyan says that he's directed local police to monitor the situation. Grandpa Razmik says the old enforcement rules were better during Soviet times and explains, "The animals were rounded up and taken to the meat factory in Kirovakan. The next day you wouldn't see hide nor hair of cows and horses."
