Armenia's Population Dropped by Almost 1 Million in Last Twenty Years

27_10-asulisAccording to this year’s Human Development Report, published by the United Nations Development Program, Armenia has a Human Development Index (HDI) of 0.798, giving the country a rank of 84 out of 182 countries with data.This year's HDI refers to 2007. Between 1990 and 2007 Armenia's HDI rose by 0.51% annually from 0.731 to 0.798 today. The HDI measures the average progress of a country in human development. The Human Poverty Index (HPI-1) focuses on the proportion of people below certain threshold levels in each of the dimensions of the human development index - living a long and healthy life, having access to education, and a decent standard of living. The HPI-1 value of 3.7% for Armenia, ranks 12th among 135 countries for which the index has been calculated. Armenia has an emigration rate of 20.3%. The major continent of destination for migrants from Armenia is Europe with 78.2% of emigrants living there. In Armenia, there are 492.6 thousand migrants which represent 16.1% of the total population. At a reception to publicize the recent report in Yerevan, Irina Davtyan, Deputy Head of the Migration Agency, pegged Armenia’s present population at three million and stated that over the past twenty years some one million residents have left the country. "Two-thirds of our migrants chose Russia, 9% chose other CIS countries, 15% go to Europe and 10% make their way to the United States," she said. This, she noted, means that 25% head for a developed nation, from Armenia, a developing one, while the majority relocate from one developing nation to another (Russia) which has an HDI ranking of 71.
