MP Safaryan - Turkey Will Not Ratify Protocols by April 24

Heritage Party faction leader, MP Stepan Safaryan stated today that he doesn’t believe that Turkey will ratify the Turkish-Armenian Protocols by April 24. "There is no time left. Turkey will not do it. The Turkish authorities have not created a favourable climate for the ratification to happen. Armenia, on the other hand, has declared that it will only ratify the Protocols after Turkey does," Safaryan said. MP Safaryan doesn’t share the belief that Armenia did not lose anything by President Sargsyan’s recent trip to Washington, DC to participate in the nuclear summit convened by US President Obama. "At the very least, Armenia let a chance slip by to place the process on the correct procedural footing and to influence Turkey’s attitude on the matter. We must admit the fact that Armenia today has no influence on Turkey’s line of conduct. One of our aims had always been to make Turkey see the importance of reviewing its political position. Armenia hadn’t been able to do so. Turkey continues to display its rejectionist and denialist approach towards the Genocide issue and it has become even more disparaging and contemptuous regarding Gharabagh. Turkey has even been so bold to dictate to the world when and to what extent it should discuss the issue. After all this, how can we say that our efforts have been productive?’ asked MP Safaryan. The Heritage Party MP is convinced that Turkey continues to attempt to push its interests to the fore and to make it appear that the normalization process is well and going forward. This is why Turkey raised several issues in Washington that are part and parcel of its anti-Armenian package, he said and pointed to the attempt by Turkey to raise the Gharabagh issue in Washington, to make demands of President Sargsyan including that the Armenian diaspora should not pursue the recognition of the 1915 Genocide in various national parliaments. MP Safaryan stated that the normalization of relations between Turkey and Armenia must take place in the context of the recognition of historical justice and the restitution of the abused and trampled rights Armenian people.
