Council of Europe Launches Project to Strengthen Healthcare and Human Rights Protection in Armenia Prisons

The launch of the “Strengthening Health Care and Human Rights Protection in Prisons in Armenia” project will take place on June 2, 2015 at 10:00 at the “Ararat” ballroom of the Armenia Marriott Hotel, Yerevan. 

This 24 month project is launched within the European Union and the Council of Europe’s Partnership Co-operation Framework in the Eastern Partnership Countries for 2015-2017(http://eap-pcf-eu.coe.int).

The co-operation agreement was signed last December to promote human rights, democracy and the rule of law in six Eastern Partnership countries, including Armenia. 

The project aims at strengthening human rights in prisons in Armenia through better provision of healthcare, including mental health care. The project’s objectives include improvement of the legal and institutional framework of healthcare in prisons, capacity building ofthe staff and improvement ofthe material conditions of prisons’ healthcare units, with a special focus on prisons that were considered as problematic in the latest reports by the Council of Europe’s Committee to Prevent Torture. 

Key speakers will include Mr. Hovhannes Manukyan, Minister of Justice of Republic of Armenia, MsNatalia Voutova, Head of Council of Europe Office in Yerevan,MrHoa-Binh Adjemian, Head of Cooperation Section of Delegation of European Union to Armenia.
