Armenian Women Rower: 'Limited opportunities force many to leave'

Lilit Tadevosyan

It took Aneta Barseghyan 8 minutes to row 2,000 meters at the 2015 World Rowing Championships held at Lac d'Aiguebelette, France, from 30 August to 6 September 2015.

Barseghyan wound up in 20th place. The first place winner covered the distance in 7 minutes and thirty seconds.

“It’s the first time I participated in the championship and was very impressed with the level of organization,” said Aneta, who mother is Belarus and father, Armenian.

“I am satisfied with my result because I’ve only been doing the sport for one year. The person who won has been at it for more than ten years,” said Barseghyan who is a fourth year student at the Slavonic’s University’s Institute of Economics and Business.

The young woman also trains in various martial arts with the ArmFighting Federation and will compete in a competition to be held in Etchmiadzin on September 28.

“I enjoy rowing and professional solo fights even though they demand super intensity. I’m preparing for the Etchmiadzin competition and then there’s the ArmFC-15 international competition,” says Aneta.

The sportswoman says that it would be great if she could stay in Armenia, despite the limited resources allocated to the sports, and then represent Armenia on the international stage.

“I can receive many offers from overseas and participate under a foreign flag, as many others do since athletes in Armenia don’t have a full chance to fulfill their potential. That’s why so many leave the country. And it’s not only in sports but all sectors.”
