Yerevan Cops Nix "New Armenia Front" Tent; Marchers Detained

Yerevan police today prevented members of the New Armenia Salvation Front from erecting a tent in Liberty Square during a speech by Heritage Party leader Raffi Hovannisian.

Hovannisian was speaking at the annual HAK rally and march to mark Human Rights Day.

March participants tried to stop police from removing the tent but were unsuccessful.

HAK MP Aram Manoukyan calmed rising passions by telling participants that “we are fighting for the right to erect a tent, and not for the tent itself.’

Referring to the December 6 constitutional change referendum that took place in Armenia, Manoukyan told the crowd, “A few days ago they were taking ballot boxes away. Now it’s a tent.”

Police also detained three individuals during the tent imbroglio.

Marchers are scheduled to make their way to the Central Electoral Commission office on Gevorg Kochar Street.
