Architects to President Sargasyan: Stop Demolition of Old Terminal at Zvartnots Airport

A group of "meritorious" architects in Armenia have written to President Serzh Sargsyan, urging him to put a halt to the demolition of the old terminal and control tower at Yerevan’s Zvartnots International Airport.

They argue that the structure, which is recognized internationally as the best structure to be built in the second half of the 20th century to be found in post-Soviet space, should be left as is until a plan to re-operate it is drafted and finalized.

Harry Mardirossian, Architect
The demolition of such an honourable structure is a shame to the present day decision makers who are driven by quick gain capital. It will be a loss to the capital Yerevan, the nation, and equally Soviet era modernist movement masterpiece. Such approach undermines all other values other than capital. This is dangerous trend as it may encompass all similar projects including the Genocide Monument as it occupies an important chunk of urban real estate. Alas all new projects replacing the old have present any intellectual design value. This act will contribute to the impoverishment of Armenian landmarks which should be stopped.
