Russian Court Throws Out Misleading Advertising Suit Against Armenian Cigarette Company
Russia’s Court of Arbitration,on March 31, refused to hear a petition filed by Phillip Morris Brands Sarl accusing Grand Tobacco (an Armenian-Canadian joint venture) of misleading advertising by marketing a cigarette brand called “Ararat” in Russia.
Phillip Morris claimed that the name “Ararat” was quite similar to its own brand Marlboro, and that consumers would be confused.
The company petitioned the Russian court to ban the sale of Ararat cigarettes in Russia.
The court found that Grand Tobacco hadn’t done anything of an anti-competitive nature, and that the two cigarette brands were quite dissimilar in all aspects.
