“ARé” Performing Arts Festival Launches Its 2019 (5th) Edition.

The following is an  “ARé” press release.

“ARé” performing arts festival (http://www.arepaf.am) was established in 2015 in the frame of the Institute for Contemporary Art, Yerevan, Armenia (http://www.ica.am ). This year we will implement its 5th edition.

Produced over a month each spring, “ARé” features performance art with crossovers of some kind or another. Especially we play on the porosity of the boundary between performing arts and visual arts, experiment with original and unusual forms.

As the concept of “genre” becomes more unreliable and less interesting to creators, we expect more artists to nestle themselves in between different forms — not as an act of rebellion or critique, but simply because that’s the way we need to be confronted by art in the world today. These new forms expand the horizons of artists and audiences with work that is visionary, genre-bending, multi-disciplined, startling and original.

Multidisciplinary and international in scope—the festival stands in its commitment to bring together critically acclaimed work from different disciplines under the umbrella of a single festival. Our festival can be considered somewhat different from other fests. As far as artists interested in performances are often visual artists, we also organise their shows/exhibitions in the frame of the fest. Workshops, symposiums, round tables and artists’ talks are also a big part of the festival.

Together with local artists, the festival has collaborated with artists from different countries showing all the range of contemporary performance art (live and video) together with exhibitions, installations and all kinds of crossovers. The festival has collaborated with artists from not only the larger region (Iran, Turkey, Syria, Israel) but also Europe (Germany, France, Austria, Switzerland, Russia, Great Britain,) and Australia.

The festival is a member of IETM and EEPAP international platforms.

Each year we suggest a new theme around which we build the concept and invite artists.

The 2019 edition bears the title “FAILURE”.

We will follow J. K. Rowling’s thought when she suggests that “It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all – in which case, you fail by default”.

And we will be not alone. Both local and international (German, Swiss, Russian, Dutch, Canadian, African, Chinese, Japanese and Israeli) artists will "fail" with us featuring installations, exhibitions, live and video performances, and various crossovers.

Moreover, the 2019 edition will have a special program – “GERMAN FOCUS”.

The celebration of “failure” as well as the “German Focus” special program will start with Antoine Wagner - Franz Liszt’s, Richard Wagner’s and Marie D’agoult's great-great -grandchild, who will present his sound/video/photo installation /performance on April 6 in the National Gallery of Armenia. The project is inspired by the "Ara Beautiful and Semiramis" legend as well as Vardges Surenyants' s homonym masterpiece (itself an object of pride). The exhibition will be organized jointly with KAROYAN GALLERY.

Arching nearly two months, “ARé” festival will bring to your attention interesting, but strange, contemporary performances, exhibitions, workshop and artists’ talks.

Some of our events we will be a part of the “Autism Information Month”. Some will integrate with the ArtWeek of the Armenia Art Fair.

We are grateful to all those individuals and organizations who believe that failures are indispensable escorts for our self-reflection and have supported us in our endeavours.
