Yerevan Municipal Council Creates New Agency to Monitor Waste Management in Armenian Capital

Yerevan Mayor to Sanitek - Less Complaining, More Work

Yerevan’s Municipal Council today approved a proposal to create a separate agency tasked with keeping the Armenian capital clean of garbage.

The move is seen as a response to Yerevan’s mounting waste collection crisis and criticism of Sanitek, the company contracted to collect and dispose of garbage. The company has been fined several times over the past year for not meeting its contractual obligations.

The agency will monitor waste collection and also remove trash when necessary.

The new agency  will also monitor winter snow removal and street salting work.

Yerevan Mayor Hayk Marutyan, in response to Sanitek allegations that the Yerevan Municipality has also violated its contractual obligations, said that Sanitek should get to work cleaning the city rather than complaining.

“I officially declare that we have not received any news from Sanitek regarding our alleged violations. They have noted the situation at the trash dump, but things haven’t gotten worse there since we came to office,” Marutyan said, addressing the council members.
