First Liver Transplant Performed in Armenia

Armenian Minister of Health Arsen Torosyan declared that doctors in Armenia, assisted by their Russian colleagues, conducted the country’s first liver transplant.

Torosyan reported the news at today’s government cabinet session, adding that the ministry is planning to financially assist those seeking liver and kidney transplants in the future.

He said that the number in Armenia of those needing such transplants is comparatively large.

The operation, usually costing US$100,000 overseas, was performed at no cost at Yerevan’s Astghik Medical Center.
