Ministry Wants to Clean More of Lake Sevan's Submerged Forested Acreage
Armenia’s Ministry of the Environment proposes to increase the amount of submerged forested acreage to be cleaned in Lake Sevan from 66.8 hectares to 98.
Some specialists have argued that trees and bushes submerged due to a slight rise in the lake’s surface was one of the causes of the recent algae bloom in Sevan.
The ministry says that a study it conducted shows that 909 hectares of water-covered area is to be cleaned, of which 826 hectares are swampy and waterlogged.
"Due to the biochemical processes taking place in Lake Sevan, as a result of which the lake is" blossoming ", the cleaning of these territories is urgent and is expected to be completed in 2021," the ministry said.
