Ministry Proposes Slashing Citizenship Processing Time in Half

Armenia’s Ministry of Justice wants to slash the time it takes to process citizenship filings in half, from six months to three months.

The ministry also says that Armenians filing for citizenship overseas should be able to obtain their citizenship documents at the diplomatic missions and consular offices of the Republic of Armenia operating in foreign countries.

The ministry reports that there are 20,000 citizenship applications, approved by the president, that are in he Police Passport and Visa Department waiting to be picked up by the applicants.

Due to various circumstances (financial, personal, etc.), these persons are unable to arrive in Armenia to obtain a passport, even though the passport is considered is a citizenship document.

The ministry also proposes not to suspend the citizenship of Armenia because of unfulfilled obligations, underlining that it violates the requirements of the Constitution.
