No More Double Checks of Parcels to Convicts

Armenia’s Ministry of Justice says it doesn’t see the need to double check the parcels and personal belongings sent or brought to detainees and convicts.

The ministry, in a statement released today, says that electronic inspections are enough if there is no reasonable suspicion that the parcels do not contain prohibited items.

The ministry notes such a change would eliminate the risks of long lines in penitentiary establishments, and penitentiary staffers would be relieved of additional admionistrative work..

According to the Ministry of Justice, all penitentiaries have the necessary equipment to inspect parcels and personal items.

Today, however, after checking the parcels, penitentiary staffers still perform a double-check, sorting the items into separate containers.
