Adoption Scandal: Yerevan Orphange Director to be Released on AMD 3 Million Bail

Yerevan Children’s Home Director Liana Karapetyan, one of the four individuals to date criminally charged in Armenia’s adoption scandal, will be released from detention on 3 million drams ($6,300) bail, this according to Karapetyan's lawyer Aleksan Khachatryan.

Khachatryan told Hetq that Yerevan General Court of Jurisdiction Judge Robert Papoyan found that the decision to detain Karapetyan was illegal.

Yesterday, Armenia’s Investigative Committee reported that Institute of Reproductive Health, Perinatology, Obstetrics, and Gynecology Director Razmik Abrahamyan had been charged with Article 167 (Illegal separation of the child from the parents or substitution of the child) and Article 200 (Commercial bribe) of the Criminal Code.

Karapetyan was charged with Article 167 and Article 314 (Official forgery).

An unnamed Yerevan woman resident was also charged with Article 167. She was released on AMD 5 million ($10,450) bail.

Aleksan Khachatryan told Hetq that his client refutes the charges as baseless.
