Karvatchar Resident Alexander Kananyan Ends Hunger Strike to Protest Hydropower Plants

Karvatchar resident Alexander Kananyan has ended his hunger strike to protest the construction of hydroelectric power plants in Artsakh’s Shahumyan District.

He started the hunger strike on January 21.

Kananyan, in a Facebook post, writes that the Artsakh government has formed a committee to review the activities of currently operating small hydro plants and their impact on the environment.

He writes that plants now being built will be investigated to see whether comply with environmental regulations.

Given these steps, the activist writes that the first phase of the struggle to halt the construction of small hydro plants in the region is over.

Kananyan concludes his post by thanking all those who expressed solidarity with his efforts.
