Armenian Environment Ministry Organizes Discussion on Lake Sevan

Armenia’s Ministry of the Environment organized a roundtable discussion centering on the problems now facing Lake Sevan and the need to restore balance to its ecosystem.

Moderated by Deputy Environment Minister Irina Ghaplanyan, the meeting was attended by Birier Carlson (Adviser-Envoy of the EU Delegation to Armenia, Ambassador of Sweden to Armenia, Chargé d’Affaires Birier Carlson), representatives of the GIZ (German Agency for International Cooperation), Veolia Water CJSC, Geocom LLC, and  Ministry of the Environment department heads.

While a ministry press release is short on specifics, it notes that local specialists focused on water/drainage treatment and the abandoned Sotk tailings dam as issues to be targeted.

Ghaplanyan touched upon the work now underway in Armenia with the EU delegation to draft a plan of action and operational measures now in the pipeline.

The issue of attracting financial resources for the restoration of Lake Sevan ecosystems was also discussed.
