Armenian Parliament VP Wants to Double "Honor Pay" to Great Patriotic War Vets

Armenian National Assembly Vice President Vahe Enfiajyan has introduced a bill to double the monthly “honor payment” of Great Patriotic War veterans to 200,000 drams ($415).

The 276 WWII vets still living in Armenia now receive 100,000 drams a month.

The amount of the “honor payment” is now set by the government.

“First, we believe that the amount of honor pay should be determined by law, thus ensuring the predictability of the amount to be received. In addition, we believe that this amount is clearly not enough to meet their minimum needs and lead a dignified life. That amount should be raised every year as prices rise,” the bill reads.

Enfiajyan, a Prosperous Armenia Party MP,  points to the military pensions and retirement benefits provided by other countries as examples to be followed by Armenia.

He says that Russian veterans receive, among other benefits, a monthly stipend the equivalent of 300,000 drams, which is expected to increase by 67,000 drams.

To mark the 75th anniversary of the victory of the Allied and Soviet forces in WWII, Kyrgyzstan also plans to increase its “honor payment” to vets, in addition to a one-time payment of the equivalent of 520,000 drams.

Enfiajyan also cites Israel, veterans receive the equivalent of 700,000 drams, and France, 1.6m drams.

"We should not forget that we are referring to seniors who must access medical care more frequently, and quality medical services are expensive are not even accessible to many. In such circumstances, it is obvious that the only way to solve the problem is to grant proper financial support,” the bill reads.
