Armenia: Government Rejects Idea of Imposing a Curfew

Armenian Deputy PM Tigran Avinyan said it’s likely that the government will require people who leave their homes to go to work to carry a document to that effect signed by their employer.

Avinyan, who also heads the country’s State of Emergency Command, said the order would likely go into effect in two days.

The government has extended its “stay at home” order, set to expire today, for another ten days.

Avinyan said that the government had also discussed the possibility of imposing a curfew but decided against the idea, adding that more police would be dispatched to monitor the “stay at home” regulations.

Avinyan did not criticize the Artsakh government for holding presidential and parliamentary elections today given the ongoing coronavirus emergency.

Describing that the elections are vital and have important national security implications, Avinyan said that the Armenian government had restricted travel to Artsakh five days ago.

No Covid-19 cases have been officially reported in Artsakh. The number of cases in Armenia has risen to 532.
