Armenia: MPs Exchange Verbal Taunts Leading to Fisticuffs in Parliament

Two Armenian MPs scuffled today at a parliamentary session reviewing the government’s track record in 2019.

The fisticuffs occurred when MP Sasun Mikayelyan interrupted a speech by Bright Armenia MP Edmon Marukyan regarding the statements made by Babgen Tunyan, Chair of the Standing Committee on Economic Affairs.

Civil Contract MP Mikayelyan, evidently disputing what Marukyan was saying, started to yell during the latter’s speech.

The two then got into a shouting match, exchanging personal taunts, which turned into fisticuffs when Maikayelyan slapped Marukyan.

Other MPs then rushed to the scene to separate the two MPs.

The shouting match continued, even though National Assembly President Ararat Mirzoyan had called for a session break.

By this time, video cameras in the chamber had been turned off but the shouting was still audible.

Mirzoyan then called on security staffers to intervene and impose order.
