Armenia’s Caves: A Visit to Simon Zagha in Vayots Dzor

Hetq, along with the Arm Speleo Team, recently visited a number of famous and not-so-famous caves in Armenia.

The cave called Simon Zagha is little known.  200 meters long, it’s located near Gnishik and Mozrov villages in Vayots Dzor.  It was first discovered during the Soviet era and revisited in 2013-14 by the Armenian Extreme Club.

There are many beautiful formations in the Simon Zagha cave: crystals, stalactites, stalagmites.

Caves are essentially underground voids caused by many diverse factors.

In Armenia, almost all cave types are to be found.

Founded in 2019, Arm Speleo Team’s cavers visit and investigate known and unknown caves in the region.

"There are many reasons to explore caves, but the main reason is that caves are the only places on earth that have not yet been fully discovered. Here you can see what has always been hidden from everyone's eyes," says Tigran Armenyan, one of the founding members of the team.

PS - Caving should never be done alone for safety reasons. Always wear a helmet and carry a flashlight. In addition, cloth gloves should be worn before touching any formations. Your hand oil can damage the fragile crystalline  formations.
