Georgia Denies Its Airspace Is Being Used to Transport Arms to Azerbaijan
Georgian Deputy Foreign Minister Lasha Darsalia, in a statement released today, denied reports that military supplies are being shipped to Azerbaijan via Georgian airspace.
“As you know, as soon as the escalation in Nagorno Karabakh began, Georgia stopped transporting military cargo by land and air to Georgia, both in the direction of Azerbaijan and Armenia,” Darsalia says.
He claims that flights through the Georgian airspace are civilian and that only humanitarian goods are shipped, and thus comply with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) rules.
The Georgian official says it’s the responsibility of the specific carrier, the owner of the cargo, to fully comply with international law and not to abuse humanitarian corridors.
"If there is clear evidence of violations, Georgia will respond appropriately. Violators will be held accountable under international law," the statement reads.
