Yerevan Police Detain Former Armenian Foreign Minister Vartan Oskanian and Others Protesting Ceasefire Declaration
Yerevan police today detained Ruben Melikyan, co-founder of the Legal Way NGO, while he was videoing cops arresting people in Liberty Square who were gathering for a rally this afternoon to protest Armenia’s signing a declaration to end the war in Artsakh.
Melikyan pointed out that while police allowed demonstrations during the war, they are now detaining people who want to voice their displeasure with the government.
"The police are protecting the traitor who handed over the land. Using violence, citizens are taken away by the defenders of the traitors who handed over land. The police are following the instructions of the traitors," said Melikyan.
Others detained included Republican Party of Armenia members Eduard Sharmazanov and Karine Achemyan, and former Armenian Foreign Minister Vartan Oskanian.
In response to a Hetq inquiry the Police Press Service reported that as of 13:30, 79 people had been detained.
Today’s scheduled rally was organized by seventeen political parties and organizations who days ago called for Pashinyan’s resignation.
