Armenia is World’s Second Most Militarized Country, Says German Research Organization

The Bonn International Center for Conversion (BICC) has ranked Armenia as the second most “militarized” nation in the world following Israel for 2019.

Azerbaijan ranks 16th and Turkey, 20th.

The BICC published its 2019 Global Militarisation Index, that reviews 151 countries, on December 3, 2020.

According to the index, Armenia rose by one spot when compared to 2018, bypassing Singapore. Israel retained its top ranking.

Following Israel and Armenia, the BICC listed, Oman, Bahrain, Singapore, Saudi Arabia, Brunei, Russia, Kuwait in the top ten.

BICC experts note that the 2019 data testify to the continuing trends of militarization in the world, especially in the Middle East.

The United States, which has the largest military budget in the world ($718 billion in 2019), ranks 27th in the rankings. "During the presidency of Donald Trump, the United States has become a more militarized country. He has increased funding for the armed forces and military personnel," the BICC stated.

The BICC describes itself as “an independent, non-profit organization that deals with a wide range of global topics in the field of peace and conflict research.
