Armenia: Shirak Residents Block Highway; Demand Information on POWs/MIAs

Residents of Armenia’s northwestern Shirak Province blocked a section of the country’s M1 Highway connecting Yerevan and Gyumri today, demanding the government provide information about family members who fought in the recent Karabakh war and are now registered as either POWs or MIAs.

Relatives of the soldiers say they have recognized family members in videos recently disseminated by the Azerbaijani media.

The Artsakh Defense Army today reported that it had lost communications with several of its units in the Hadrut region and that the possibility existed that Armenian soldiers had been taken prisoner.

Artsakh Human Rights Defender Artak Beglaryan today reported that a unit of some sixty servicemen went missing near Artsakh’s Khtsaberd village.

The Shirak Provincial Administration’s office told Hetq that Governor Tigran Petrosyan met with the protesters, telling them he was in contact with defense agencies to clarify the situation.
