Armenian Parliament Discusses Candidacy of Gagik Jahangiryan for Supreme Judicial Council

The Armenian National Assembly today, at a special session, discussed the candidacy of Gagik Jahangiryan as a member of the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC).

Jahangiryan was nominated to the post by the ruling Im Kayl (My Step) parliamentary faction.

Jahangiryan served as Armenia’s Deputy Prosecutor General from 2006-2008. In 2012, he was elected to the parliament on the national list of the Armenian National Congress bloc.

In early 2008, Jahangiryan joined the post-presidential election protest movement led by Armenia’s first president Levon Ter- Petrosyan. He was dismissed as deputy prosecutor general by then President Robert Kocharyan.

Jahangiryan was subsequently convicted of having committed   violence against a government official. Jhangiryan was sentenced to three years in prison but was released under an amnesty after serving sixteen months.

In September 2019, Armenia’s Court of Cassation of Armenia overturned the verdict.

Jahangiryan said that while he doesn’t intend to run for the presidency of the SJC, he wouldn’t turn down the post if offered it.
