PACE Calls for Observance of Democratic Principles in Armenia

PACE monitoring co-rapporteurs for Armenia, Boriana Aberg (Sweden, EPP/CD) and Kimmo Kiljunen (Finland) have called for the observance of democratic principles in Armenia, this according to a TASS news report.

"We are extremely concerned about the latest events in Armenia. We consider the statement published on Thursday by the General Staff of the Armed Forces calling for the resignation of the democratically elected government inadmissible," the PACE representatives wrote in a statement.

They called on "all political forces and state institutions to fully observe the democratic principles and provisions of the Constitution of Armenia, to take all necessary measures to immediately de-escalate the current situation."

"Armenia is going through a very difficult phase of its modern history, and more than ever, it needs reassurance, restraint, wisdom, as well as its full support from all parties in order for democratic principles to prevail, which will help resolve the current political crisis,” reads the co-rapporteurs’ statement.
