Armenian Foreign Minister Says Artsakh Military Defeat Wasn't the Fault of Armenian Diplomacy

Armenian Foreign Minister Ara Ayvazyan said that the Armenian defeat in last year’s Artsakh war was not the fault of Armenia’s diplomacy.

"The President of Azerbaijan, as he recently admitted, rejected all compromise options, adding with pride that he had been preparing for a military solution of the issue for a long time. So, what happened is not the fault of Armenian diplomacy," Ayvazyan said today at a meeting of the Armenian National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Foreign Relations.

Ayvazyan argued that Armenia’s diplomatic work, over the past 26 years, successful maintained the status-quo regarding Artsakh and was searching for a final negotiated settlement, but that Azerbaijan opted for a military solution.

"This war also showed our weaknesses and internal mistakes, including those of the Foreign Ministry,” Ayvazyaan said, adding that it was incorrect to only blame Armenian diplomacy for the defeat.

Ayvazyan said that everyone in Armenia today is looking for scapegoats, someone to blame.

“That time will come. Today, we must all focus on solving current problems. Let's look to the future,” Ayvazyan said, promising that a comprehensive analysis of past shortcomings and mistakes will be forthcoming.

He did not specify when such a review would take place.
