Coronavirus Outbreak Forces Three Schools In Armenia's Armavir Province to Go On-Line

A recent coronavirus outbreak among teachers has forced three schools in Armenia’s Armavir Province to close their doors and conduct lessons on-line.

The impacted schools are in the communities of Baghramyan, Geghakert and Hatsik.

Hatsik Secondary School Principal Tat Mkrtchyan told Hetq that classes have been conducted remotely since April 2.

Four teachers at the school tested positive for the virus, including the deputy principal. No students have tested positive.

The Geghakert high school has been conducting distance learning since March 25.

Four teachers, 10% of the staff, tested positive for the virus. Two are still undergoing treatment.

Baghramyan Secondary School Principal Knarik Galstyan told Hetq that the school has changed over to on-line lessons since March 26. He did not say how many teachers tested positive for the virus.

Sonya Budaghyan, who heads the Armavir Provincial Government’s Department of Education, Culture and Sports, told Hetq that only the three mentioned schools have closed their doors.

When asked if other schools might have to revert to distance learning, Budaghyan said she believes local authorities are adequately monitoring the virus situation.

“I can’t predict what will happen. Only time will tell. But the situation in Armavir is reassuring,” Budaghyan said.
