Pashinyan Warns Parliamentary Opposition Not to Nominate Prime Ministerial Candidates

At a special session today of Armenia’s National Assembly, the ruling Im Kayl (My Step) faction nominated Acting Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan for the post of prime minister.

Pashinyan resigned as prime minister on April 25 to trigger a new parliamentary election scheduled for June 20.

Pashinyan faced mounting demands to step down following Armenia’s defeat in last year’s war in Artsakh.

The two other parliamentary factions earlier agreed not to nominate a new prime minister in the interim.

Pashinyan stressed that if there is a violation of the agreement, the My Step faction would elect him prime minister. Pashinyan said he hoped that no attempt will be made to violate the agreement.

Pashinyan added that he and his wife had been vaccinated against Covid-19 this morning and urged MPs to do the same.

He said that travel restrictions might be levied against citizens not vaccinated starting in the second half of 2021.
