Ilham Aliyev: "Azerbaijani and Armenian Peoples Must Learn to Live Side by Side"

The peoples of Azerbaijan and Armenia must learn to live side by side, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said on Thursday at a Baku conference dedicated to the development and prospects of cooperation in the South Caucasus, this according to the Russian TASS news agency on May 20.

"Azerbaijan is open for cooperation, open for planning a common future, because we are neighbors, whether we like it or not. We must live side by side, and we must learn to live side by side again," Aliyev said.

However, he admitted that it is not easy. "Emotions are present, especially when Azerbaijanis visit the liberated territories and see total destruction. You can imagine what emotions they feel. But the role of politicians is to protect the existing agenda and explain that only through contacts, through interaction, one can ensure development, peace and security in the region,” Aliyev added.

“The war is over and now is a time for the new vision for South Caucasus with the focus on development and cooperation in order to make Karabakh one of the best regions of the world,” Aliyev said in his opening remarks according to AzerTac.

Matthew Bryza, a former U.S. Ambassador to Azerbaijan who also served as a U.S. Co-Chair to the OSCE Minsk Group, is quoted as saying the following at the video conference.

“Thank you, Mr. President. It’s an honor to be with you. Nice to see you in this new world. I want to pick up on where you just left off-about the mindsets both in Armenia and Azerbaijan. The fact that this decisive victory that Azerbaijan won through combination of innovative technologies, and tactics, but also incredible bravery. I don’t think people understand that you conducted the war in a restrained way. The collateral damage, or civilian casualties were at a minimum. You showed strategic vision by pausing after you won the military phase of war in Shusha. Consistently the war aims that were articulated, were also consistent with years of negotiations and preliminary agreement back in 2009, and the so-called basic principles.”
