Azerbaijan Charges Two Armenian Captives with Torture: Accusations Date to 1990s Karabakh War

The trial of Armenian captives Ludwig Mkrtchyan and Alyosha Khosrovyan, who, according to the Azerbaijani media, were taken prisoner during the 2020 Karabakh war, started started today in Baku.

Little is known of the two captives and what they were doing in Karabakh at the time. The Armenian Ministry of Defense has so far not commented on the case. Hetq has written to the ministry for clarification.

Azerbaijani media outlets (Trend, Minval) media write that the two are accused of "other crimes committed during the first Artsakh war, allegedly torturing Azerbaijani prisoners."

The main trial will start on June 9 and will take place in the Baku Military Court.

Ludwig Mkrtchyan, captured on October 20, 2020 in Artsakh’s Varanda region, is accused of torturing twelve Azerbaijani prisoners during the first Artsakh war in 1991 and keeping them in the forest of the village of Aygestan near Ivanyan for seventeen days. He’s also accused of beating captured Azerbaijani soldiers and killing one of them.

Armenian citizen Alyosha Khosrovyan is, according to Azerbaijani media reports, accused of the inhuman and cruel treatment of five Azerbaijani prisoners in 1994.

Azerbaijani media write that Khosrovyan was captured on October 3, 2020, while trying to conduct reconnaissance operations in Azerbaijan.

International law expert Ara Ghazaryan told Hetq that according to international humanitarian law, all prisoners of war must be repatriated immediately after the end of the war.

Azerbaijan refuses to comply with this demand, noting that the Armenian captives held in Baku are "war criminals."
