Armenian Forensic Official Says 3,500 Corpses/Remains of Soldiers Killed in Karabakh War Examined to Date

Forensic specialist Armen Gevorgyan, Chief Expert of the Ararat Department of Yerevan’s Republican Medical Center, said at a press conference at the National Institute of Health today that some 3,500 corpses/remains of soldiers killed in the 44-day Artsakh war have been examined so far.

Gevorgyan confessed that Armenia lacked adequate refrigeration units to store the bodies and that in some towns units designed to store fruit were used. He said that the country’s morgues are now equipped with a refrigeration system that meets European standards.

Sergey Abgaryan, who heads Armavir’s Provincial Forensic Medical Examination Department, said that there are 88 corpses and 58 remains now being stored in refrigeration units in Armavir.

Gevorgyan said the soldiers’ bodies were brought to them in white polyethylene bags, which have a transparent pocket with a serial number. There was no name or surname on any of the bodies.

"All the remains and corpses are coded and listed,” said Gevorgyan, adding that they cannot reveal the number of unidentified remains.

Gevorgyan did not say how many such bags had been shipped to the Ararat Medical Center.
