Top Armenian Official Denies Any Talk of "Corridor"

Acting Chief of Staff of the Prime Minister Arsen Torosyan told journalists today that the government has never discussed the creation of a corridor through southern Armenia linking Nakhijevan with the rest of Azerbaijan.

Torosyan said the issue is not included in a Russian-brokered document designed to demarcate the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Acting Armenian Minister of Defense Vagharshak Harutyunyan is in Moscow for talks on the border stand-off. Also attending the talks is Rustam Muradov, commander of Russian peacekeeping troops in Karabakh.

"The Moscow talks have been quite substantive and clear points have been stressed. They will continue to reach the solution we have talked about many times. Azerbaijani troops must leave the sovereign territory of Armenia. It will be achieved via our strategic partner and our work of our armed forces," Torosyan said, adding that, if necessary, information on the ongoing talks will be passed on to the public.

Torosyan said Armenia and Russia have reached a mutual understanding on the problem’s resolution.

"They are making every effort to ensure that there is no shooting, because there’s still the possibility of a large-scale war,” said Torosyan.

Torosyan said not all the details of bilateral and multilateral relations need to be made public at once.

Asked what was going on at the foreign ministry, after the resignation of Ara Ayvazyan as minister and whether the deputy ministers had resigned, Torosyan said that there was an acting foreign minister who was fulfilling his duties in accordance with the law.
