Today is Monte Melkonian Memorial Day

The national hero of Armenia and Artsakh, commander of the Martuni regional self-defense forces was killed on June 12, 1993, on the outskirts of the village of Marzili in the Aghdam region by an Azerbaijani armored vehicle. He was posthumously awarded the highest military awards by the two Armenian states.

Residents of the Artsakh city of Martuni, in honor of the commander, call the city Monteaberd.
