Russia Reaffirms Readiness to Consult on Armenia-Azerbaijan Border Demarcation

Russian Foreign Ministry Representative Maria Zakharova today reaffirmed Moscow’s readiness to offer technical advice to jump start the demarcation of sections of the Armenia-Azerbaijan border.

"We have stressed several times that we regard the start of demarcation work between Armenia and Azerbaijan, as soon as possible, as the stable, long-term solution to this problem. We are ready to provide the necessary advisory assistance. Now, contacts are continuing between the foreign policy and defense ministries, as well as the border services, to reduce tensions," said Zakharova.

She said that Russia sees no connection between the Armenian-Azerbaijani border standoff and the settlement of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict.

"We believe that the situation on some parts of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border is not related to the settlement of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict. It’s a consequence of the lack of international legal delimitation of the borders. The overall picture, without a doubt, aggravates the lack of mutual trust between the parties,” said Zakharova.
