A group called Kanachastan has organized a series of events in Armenia to coincide with Earth Day on April 22.

The environmental action groups have declared Sunday to be “Car Free Day” in Yerevan, a first for the country where cars tend to be big and expensive and the preferred means of transport.

Events, including games and films, will take place at Beirut Street and the Stepan Shahumyan statue starting at 2pm.

People are urged to walk or bike to the events. Tips on safe bicycle riding will be provided. This is a must for a city like Yerevan where drivers have just come around to the idea that pedestrians have the right of way.
