$45 Million in Heroin Seized in Ukraine; Drugs Were Trucked from Iran Via Armenia
Armenian law enforcement agencies report that it participated in a international drug bust that seized a cache of heroin valued at $45 million that trucked from Iran to the Georgian port of Poti, via Armenia, and then was transported to the Ukranian port of Chernomorsk via boat.
Armenia’s State Revenue Committee (SRC), in a statement released today, says that in early July it received intelligence that an international criminal syndicate planned to smuggle large quantities of heroin to Europe via Armenia.
The SRC says it tracked the truck as it passed through Armenia and that Russian and U.S. law enforcement agencies were involved in the investigation.
On July 22, Ukranian and Georgian law enforcement officers raided a Kiev warehouse, rented by two Turkish citizens, and seized the drugs.
The two Turkish citizens were later arrested.
