Hakob Arshakyan Elected Armenian Parliament Deputy Speaker

Hakob Arshakyan, a member of the board of the ruling Civil Contract party, was elected Deputy Speaker of Armenia’s National Assembly today.

Arshakyan received 71 votes, all from Civil Contract faction MPs. Opposition MPs boycotted the vote.

Arshakyan, who previously served as Minister of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, was Armenia’s Minister of High-Tech Industry when a scandal broke out this past February over Armenia’s participation in the IDEX-2021 International Military-Industrial Exhibition in Abu Dhabi.

Armenia’s pavilion at the exhibition featured empty shelves. The ministry issued a statement alleging that transportation of the exhibits was organized in advance, but that “logistical” problems arose.

Arshakyan later noted that the Armenian pavilion was one of the best at the exhibition.

Alen Simonyan has been elected Speaker of the National Assembly and Ruben Rubinyan, First Deputy Speaker.
