Shouting Match Disrupts Armenian Parliament Session

Armenian National Assembly Speaker Alen Simonyan was forced to dispatch security personnel today to break up a shouting match between opposition and majority Civil Contract MPs.

The incident began when Parliamentary Vice Speaker Ishkhan Saghatelyan, a member of the opposition Hayastan (Armenia) Aliance declared that calling someone a “capitulant” or “land giver” is not a personal affront but rather a political assessment.

Hearing this, Civil Contract MP Narek Grigoryan stood up in the chamber and started shouting that such a position is unacceptable. Opposition MPs then joined the unfolding vocal fray.

The incident was broadcast live despite security staff attempts to prevent journalists from covering it.

Civil Contract MPs argue that such speech, directed at PM Pashinyan, is slander and must be prohibited.

Simonyan then ordered the cameras to be turned off.

Today’s parliamentary session was interrupted for twenty minutes.
