Alliance Led by Incumbent Mayor Wins Gyumri Municipal Election

An alliance led by incumbent Mayor Samvel Balasanyan won yesterday’s municipal council election in Gyumri, Armenia’s second largest city.

The Samvel Balasanya alliance won 9,631 votes (36.4%).

Voter turnout was quite low. Of the 109,453 eligible voters, 26,468 (24.2%) cast ballots on Sunday.

The new municipal council will elect the town’s next mayor.

 The Civil Contract party came in second with 29.4%, followed by the Zartonk (Awakening) party with 10.6%, Aprelu Yerkir (Country of Living) party with 5.6%, and the Republican Party of Armenia with 5.1%.

In the Syunik town of Meghri, the Republic party won 41.8% of the vote in yesterday’s municipal council election. The Civil Contract party came in second with 32.1%.

Voter turnout was 59.3%.

In the resort town of Dilijan, the Civil Contract party won yesterday’s municipal council election with 56.8% of votes cast. The Country of Living party came in second with 23.8%.

Voter turnout was 44%.
