Armenia May Ask for CSTO Assistance on Border Issue

Armenian Ambassador to Russia Vardan Toghanyan today hinted that Armenia may petition CSTO (the Russian-led Collective Security Treaty Organization) for help to combat Azerbaijani border incursions despite yesterday’s Russian-brokered ceasefire.

"It's hard to say. It depends on how the situation develops. We have what we have. Let's see how things develop," Toghanyan told RIA Novosti.

Yesterday, CSTO Spokesman Vladimir Zainetdinov said that the CSTO Secretariat had not received an official application from Yerevan regarding tensions along the Armenian-Azerbaijani border.

“CSTO is closely following the situation. No application has been officially received from the Armenian Secretariat. We believe that the conflict should be resolved only through peaceful, political-diplomatic means," Zainetdinov said.
