Armenia Sends 70 Soldiers to Kazakhstan as Part of CSTO Pecekeeping Force

Armenia has sent around seventy servicemen to Kazakhstan as part of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) peacekeeping forces, this according to the news website Sputnik Armenia.

A state of emergency has been introduced in Kazakhstan after protests over the doubling of fuel prices turned violent this week.

Armenian PM Nikol Pashinyan, who serves as the CSTO chairman, confirmed that the alliance will send ‘peacekeepers’ to Kazakhstan for a limited period given the threat to national security and the sovereignty of Kazakhstan.

Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev petitioned CSTO for help after unrest broke out across the country on Wednesday.

The protests in Kazakhstan were ignited when the government lifted price controls on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) at the start of the year.

CSTO includes Russia, Belarus, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan.
