Yerevan Court Extends Pre-Trial Detention of Former Armenian Defense Minister

A Yerevan court today decided to extend the pre-trial detention of former Defense Minister Davit Tonoyan, Chief of the General Staff of the Armenian military, General Artak Davtyan and other defendants charged with fraud and embezzlement charges related to purchases of faulty weaponry and ammunition for the Armenian armed forces.

The defendants include businessman David Galstyan, who owns several firms that have supplied weapons and ammunition to the military for years, and former Chief of Military Aviation Avetik Muradyan.

The court upheld the motion to release one of the accused, Head of Aviation Technical Service of the Aviation Department Artyom Hambaryan, on 5 million AMD bail.

Armenia’s National Security Service arrested Tonoyan, Galstyan, and the others in September for allegedly defrauding the state of some $4.7 million.

The case involves the purchase of thousands of air-to-surface missiles that a company owned by Galstyan delivered to Armenia's military in 2011.
