Pashinyan, Aliyev to Meet in Brussels on April 6

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev will meet on April 6 in Brussels.

According to a statement issued by the European Council, the two leaders will meet with European Council President Charles Michel.

Details about the meeting are not known as this time.

The previous face-to-face meeting between Pashinyan and Aliyev took place in Brussels on December 14, 2021. The scheduling of that meeting was reached on November 19, when Michel had telephone conversations with Pashinyan and Aliyev.

Prior to the November meeting, Pashinyan and Aliyev met on November 26 in Sochi, where a trilateral meeting had taken place with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

It took place after military clashes occurred in Armenia’s Syunik Province. After the meeting in Sochi, the parties announced that would start the demarcation and delineation of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border.

On March 25, Artsakh Human Rights Defender Gegham Stepanyan reported that fourteen Armenian servicemen were wounded in attacks launched by the Azerbaijani Armed Forces. Later, the Artsakh Defense Army (ADA) reported three servicemen had been killed.

On March 26, the Artsakh Defense Ministry reported that Azerbaijani troops again tried to advance in the direction of the eastern border of Artsakh, in the area under the responsibility of the Russian peacekeeping contingent, using different caliber firearms.

That evening, the Artsakh Defense Ministry reported that Azerbaijani troops tried to advance, again in the area of responsibility of the Russian peacekeeping troops, towards the Karaglukh heights. The ADA retaliated to stop the Azerbaijani advance.

The command of the Russian peacekeeping contingent stationed in Artsakh then called on Baku to withdraw its troops from the territories occupied in the Askeran region in the previous days.

Despite a Russian announcement that Azerbaijani troops had withdrawn from the village of Parukh, the ADA reported they still occupied a section of the Karaglukh heights.
