Armenia: Day 2 of Protests to Topple Pashinyan’s Government

The political opposition in Armenia, headed by the Hayastan and With Honor parliamentary factions, launched a second day of protests to topple the government of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

Yesterday, a contingent of ARF youth and citizens led by Hayastan MP Anna Grigoryan started to march on Yerevan from the Ararat Province village of Tigranashen.

Armenia’s ARF Youth Union of Armenia today staged a protest on Yerevan’s Komitas Avenue. Parliamentary Vice Speaker, Hayastan MP Ishkhan Saghatelyan reported live on Facebook that police had detained the protesters.

The Human Rights Defender’s Office later announced that staffers visited 24 detainees and were told that police used force to detain them and provided no legal justification.

"Our compatriots will take to the streets in greater numbers. We will have the critical mass in the streets, against which the government cannot resist. Pashinyan cannot use force against the people when there are the numbers we expect, especially when we see how people's attitudes have changed," With Honor MP faction head Artur Vanetsyan told reporters.

Protesters marching under the Resistance Movement banner today gathered near Yerevan’s Davit of Sassoun statute in Yerevan. They marched to the intersection of Teryan and Sayat Nova streets and sat down in the middle of roadway. They said the action was in defense of political prisoners.
