Armenia Ranks 51st in 2022 Global Freedom Index
Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has ranked Armenia 51st out of 180 countries in its recently released World Press Freedom Index.
Armenia’s 51st ranking for 2022 is an improvement from its 63rd spot in 2021.
Regarding the media in Armenia, RSF writes: “Despite a pluralistic environment, the media remain polarised. The country is facing an unprecedented level of disinformation and hate speech, especially concerning the Nagorno-Karabakh territorial dispute between Armenia and Azerbaijan.”
RSF notes that while social networks are the main sources of news in Armenia, independent online news sites prosper.
It sites Civilnet.am, hetq.am, Factor.am and Azatutyun.am as fulfilling their role as an essential counterweight for democracy.
