Armenia: Day 10 of Anti-Government Protests

Armenian National Assembly Vice Speaker Ishkhan Saghatelyan, who has spearheaded more than a week of protests in Yerevan to force the resignation of PM Nikol Pashinyan, yesterday told supporters that the administration has only a few days left in power.

Thousands of government opponents gathered in Yerevan’s Liberty Square yesterday and backed a demand, submitted at the National Assembly by the opposition parliamentary Hayastan and With Honor factions, that Pashinyan resign.

While protesters marched on the National Assembly, inside, Hayastan MP Armen Rustamyan accused Pashinyan of thwarting the Artsakh negotiation process and bringing war and defeat to the Armenian side.

"Nikol Pashinyan is not legitimate. Our state does not have a mandate to make new concessions, it must resign," Rustamyan said.

Pashinyan, also present at today’s legislative session, responded that former President Serzh Sargsyan had scuttled the negotiation process.

Continuing, Pashinyan claimed that to stop the war, he had to agree that Karabakh was a part of Azerbaijan.

Hearing this, opposition MPs left the chamber.

"So, you do not want to hear this. You’re running away, like you always do,” Pashinyan said as pro-government MPs applauded.

Outside, protesters marched to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and placeed Artsakh flags nearby, symbolizing that Artsakh is Armenian land.
