Armenia Hasn’t Sent Protest Note to Ankara Re: “Grey Wolves” Salute

Armenia has not sent an official note of protest to Ankara regarding the April 23 "Grey Wolves - Bozkurtlar" salute made by Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu directed at Armenian demonstrators in Montevideo, Uruguay.

"Please be informed that the Armenian side did not send a note to the Turkish side," the Armenian Foreign Ministry said in a written response to Hetq.

Çavuşoğlu was caught on camera making the sign of the Turkish ultra-nationalist Grey Wolves organization as he left the Turkish Embassy in Montevideo while Armenians shouted “murderer” in Spanish at his car.

The Uruguayan Foreign Minister summoned Turkish Ambassador
Hüseyin Müftüoğlu to the ministry on April 25 for clarification.

The only official Armenian reaction was made by Eduard Aghajanyan, Chair of the Armenian National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Foreign Relations.

"On the eve of the 107th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, Turkish's Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu ‘s nationalist gesture to members of the Armenian community in Montevideo is a reprehensible act,” Aghajanyan wrote in a Facebook post.

According to the El Pais newspaper, Uruguayan Foreign Minister Francisco Bustillo condemned Çavuşoğlu’s action, saying Uruguay is a country that respects memory and seeks peace.

"Our country prefers reconciliation in case of confrontation. We preach mutual understanding, tolerance; we hope that those who visit this country where peace and tolerance are preached will do the same. I reject and condemn any offensive behavior or gesture that implies physical or moral violence," Bustillo said at a local event marking the anniversary of the Armenian Genocide.
